Dearest and i managed to catch P RAMLEE THE MUSICAL when it had their run in Singapore at the Esplanade theatre. And i can honestly tell you,it is one of those shows that left you sighing after it ended as you do want to see it over and over again. The musical was for a lack of a better vocabulary, rocks!Maybe, because,it’s in Malay and it’s more closer to home.It started with P Ramlee and Saloma,in their home in KL and they were reminiscing about their careers ups and downs, while he is humming a particular song which happened to be his last song before his passing. Then it when through the times of Penang,to the time in Singapore and KL.It ended with them back at the same house where he belted out his last song “Airmata di Kuala Lumpur”.Which curtain closed with a bang. The show left me tearful at how it was beautifully done.
Let’s talk about Allahyarham P Ramlee, more about his life as it’s performed in the musical.
Firstly,it started with the appearance of Azizah. Azizah came fom a well to do family and her relationship with P Ramlee came since they were young and it lasted till they’re young adults.P Ramlee is a very talented man and he competed in various talentime shows which he got in second and third placing before eventually winning the first place in a talentime show in Penang. He created “Azizah”,a particular song which he dedicated to his childhood girlfriend. But,in that period of time, a Singaporean Talent scout, saw his talents and tried to persuade him to venture to Singapore. At which,he is two hearted about it,firstly,he had to leave his hometown and Azizah and secondly,if he chooses not to,he would miss a great opportunity.Hence,Azizah, reluctantly let him go,without any guilt so as he would not miss this great chance to make a name for himself.Hence,P Ramlee,at Syawal, went to Singapore to try out in the Malay Film Production which he managed to rise up to the top and eventually directed his first movie,Penarik Beca,at which,he immortalized Azizah.
After which,P Ramlee got married to Junaidah,a dancer.Eventually, their marriage was bliss but, being in the show business, they’re not free from gossips and scandals. And this got Junaidah very worried at how his popularity would eventually ruin the marriage. As P Ramlee is rising up,his marriage went down and eventually, they got a divorced.Broken hearted and crest fallen was P Ramlee but, come next was
Noorizan, the Queen. She was the one who helped P Ramlee rised to fame. She was a so called “Manager” for him which helped him rise to the top of the league where he get various publicity. But P Ramlee’s life is full of gossips and scandals, which he knew would eventually hurt his marriage. After listening to scandals about his wife, from paparazis. He eventually, divorced Noorizan and came to a 2nd failed marriage. But sometimes, fate has its own way to bring two person together, when he eventually met,
Saloma. She was considered the one woman that was very compatible with P Ramlee,as both of them were great singers and Saloma, was hot.*shakes*Anyways, this part of the musical shows the comical side of P Ramlee and his charming ways to eventually wooed Saloma.Saloma too,had a huge crush on him.The funny side of this couple came when they were rehearsing for a song for the movie “Seniman Bujang Lapok”.They eventually got married and life became blissful again for P Ramlee.Everyone in the show biz, applauded at their marriage as it’s considered a match made in heaven at that particular time.Their marriage works but their careers didn’t as finally,Shaw Brothers,Malay Film Production had to close down due to unrest in Singapore. The Shaw Brothers didn’t want P Ramlee’s talent to be wasted so he was transferred to KL with Merdeka Films.
P Ramlee had a hard time in KL as people didn’t accepted P Ramlee that well. But,slowly he strives on.To gain the respect and the support of the people in Malaysia, the same way he was accepted in Singapore. So eventually the musical came back to KL,a more older P Ramlee, with Saloma. He composed his last song and the show ended with them, teasing each other.
A standing ovation.i must say, from the music to the dances,to the stage play.It gave a great impact in me.It’s like,i’m seeing P Ramlee as if he’s alive again. No wonder the auntie next to me was emotional.I just hope the soundtrack is up soon or better still, have it into a movie.
*smiles*
